BURLEIGH GRIMES

"Burleigh Grimes had a brother named Shurleigh. You know that they had to be the toughest guys in the neighborhood with those names. In 1920, a batter was killed by  a pitched ball. The Major Leagues banned the spitball from baseball as a result. 17 pitchers were allowed to continue to pitch using the now illegal spitball. Burleigh Grimes was the last legal spitballer. He used slippery elm to load up his pitches. He was called “Boily” as well as “Old Stubblebeard” because on days he pitched, he didn’t shave. In 1938,  the Dodgers had 3 different managers under contract: Max Carey and Casey Stengel got paid not to manage, while Burleigh Grimes managed the team. "
