BILLY LOES

"Queen’s Billy Loes was considered to be a strange ballplayer – essentially, a flake. “You never knew what was coming,” catcher Ralph Campanella once said. Billy was a bonus baby signed off the sandlots for $30,000 by the Dodgers. He won a total of 50 games for Brooklyn, and claimed that if you win 20 games in a season, they expect you to do it every time. Loes picked the rival New York Yankees to win the World Series in 1952.  This naturally upset some of his teammates. When asked for clarification by the press, he claimed he picked the Yankees to win in 7 games, not 6. Ironically, he is famous for losing a low line drive in the sixth game which hit him in the shin and ended up costing them the game. He said he lost it in the sun. "
